Earth Live From the ISS

These days, there are plenty of options for cord cutters. There’s Amazon Prime, hulu, Netflix, the many free services available on a Roku box like Youtube, Sky News Live, PBS, Crackle, Smithsonian, Fox News and many others. Sky News is completely live, but only the Fox News audio is live. Youtube, fortunately is very convenient because it’s available in many forms and thankfully it’s available on a regular computer browser as well. So, if you need some live news and you only have access to your regular desktop or notebook computer, here are some links that you may find useful:

Poor Man’s Home Theater

For my birthday, my brother got me a  3M Streaming Projector Powered by Roku and it’s amazing. It’s a tiny portable battery powered projector that connects to a Roku streaming stick. With this device, you can wirelessly connect to services like Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Amazon and project everything onto a wall or projector screen. The audio comes directly from the unit, but I strongly recommend plugging it into a stereo receiver with some nice speakers. When you use this with a projector screen in a darkened room, the result is like watching TV in a movie theater. I also recommend using a tripod to position the unit (my JOBY GorillaPod doesn’t quite support it, but it works and makes the whole thing look like a War of the Worlds martian tripod). The android remote control app is also nice and allows you to use your phone as a remote control.

The Night is Saved

It was bugging me that I wouldn’t have any new parts until Monday morning. ** Saturday night and I had no parts to build a working computer ** horrors! Fortunately, there were a few non-working mainboards that had some potential. What a relief! Several replaced capacitors later, I had a working mainboard with a dual core processor… and there is a new version of my favorite Linux distribution on! Whew! My Saturday night is complete!
