You Don’t Have to Smash Your Hard Drive with a Hammer to Securely Dispose of It

One customer insisted that his older drive be destroyed in order to prevent people from harvesting data after they retrieved the drive from his trash bin. I explained that it could be wiped in a manner that would make retrieval impossible – even if the CIA was involved. It’s true – drives can be securely wiped and reformatted for future use. Anyway, he still felt uncomfortable, so I disassembled the drive and gave him the platters. He proceeded to scratch one platter with the other. Anyway, they’re just wind chimes at this point. I recommend that people look into securely wiping their drives. It’s certainly less wasteful than destroying them.
